Robert Bonfils, LUST FOR YOUTH - "She vied with her daughter in a tantalizing game of seduction !" - The Newsstand Library (Neva) paperback release of this story by Warner Jackson. Bonfils' signature is evident on the windowshade.

Ernest Chiriacka, WINNER TAKE ALL - "Reno: The games are legit, it's the women you have to watch-especially one named Linda" - The Dell paperback release of this story by James McKimmey. You can see that it is signed 'Darcy', which was a pseudonym used by Chiriacka.

Ernest Chiriacka, AFTER OFFICE HOURS - "A devastating novel about sex and the office girl! // A working girl's experiences with love and lust from hot-handed bosses" - The Beacon Books paperback release of this story by Brian Black. Another edition, this time under their Softcover Library imprint, presented this art cropped down quite a bit, with new blurbs: "Those sex-hungry young lovelies make business pleasure...After Office Hours // Red hot! Tells how career girls get their kicks in today's offices and stores...searching for sexual thrills...squandering their bodies !". On the painting here can be seen the signature with only the captital 'D' discernable, denoting 'Darcy', the pseudonym Chiriacka frequently used.

Ernest Chiriacka, SO SOON TO DIE - "A hired killer stalks a lovely victim" - The Pyramid paperback release of this thriller by Jeremy York. It seems the art was re-used by a Norwegian publisher, Viking, for 'Death Visited The Nightclub' [Døden Besøkte Natte-Klubben], a translation and apparent re-titling of some Richard Deming novel. Later you see this art re-used as the interior illustration, and one-half of the cover of GUY 1966-Aug for the Parker series story (by 'Richard Stark' (Donald Westlake)) Death Comes In Shes ((which is better known now as The Score) "Parker would take the town-then her !"). You can see that it is signed 'Darcy', which was a pseudonym used by Chiriacka.

Ernest Chiriacka, FLY GIRL - "Are airline hostesses hard to get? Cynthia Westland wasn't!--When a jet-powered hostess and a hot pilot lock horns, no holds are barred and the sky's the limit ... Here is the frankly told story of the girls who live dangerously-and love recklessly !" - The Beacon Books paperback release of this story by Matt Harding. Years later the art was cropped tighter and re-used on one of Beacon's releases of The Club, by Steve Yardley-"Four restless husbands, four willing wives ... and sixteen scandalous reasons why they rode a merry-go-round of wild switch and swap !"

Ernest Chiriacka, COMMUNITY OF WOMEN - "When the last commuter train pulls out of the station, it leaves behind a...Community Of Women...idle young matrons, finely bred but bored...their empty days filled with card games, cocktails and daring dreams...their empty beds waiting-often for the next deliveryman! // A biting and frank novel probing the frustrated world of pushbutton kitchens-and doorbell love !" - The Beacon Books paperback release of this story by 'Sheldon Lord' (this time Lawrence Block). Note that this art was re-formulated years later and utilized on the cover of VACATION GIRLS.

Ernest Chiriacka, [unknown title] - This painting was created for one of the Brown & Bigelow Calendars around the last mid-century.

Ernest Chiriacka, THE BIG FIX - "Here was a proposition he couldn't refuse" - The Pyramid Books paperback release of this story by Ed Lacy ("author of Room To Swing, winner of the 1958 Mystery Writers Of America 'Edgar' Award"). Four years later, this art was re-used inside Man's Magazine 1964-May, to accompany the story The Demonstration. You can see the frequently used signature of 'Darcy', which was a common pseudonym employed by Chiriacka.

Four years later, the same publisher used more of the the original painting on their SEX NEST by Meredith Stern ("College boy moves in on his father's women...Sex Nest--An explosive novel of father and son competing for love and lust in modern suburbia").

Ernest Chiriacka, UNSWAYED BY DRAMATIC CAMPAIGNS, (inside ESQUIRE GIRL CALENDAR 1952 (Nov)) - "She always votes straight for a party, // Unswayed by dramatic campaigns. // Her support never waivers from the parties she favors - // The good ones that flow with champagne."

Online, I've frequently seen this girl's image combined instead with the doggerel that accompanied a differenet lass found in May of that year's Esquire Girl Calendar.

Ernest Chiriacka, ACKWARD IN THE KITCHEN, (inside ESQUIRE GIRL CALENDAR DELUXE 1954 (Apr)) - "I'm so ackward in the kitchen // That I just can't understand // Why several chaps are chasing me // And bidding for my hand"

Read this shocking story of an executive who consents to lend out his wife !" - The Beacon Books paperback release of this story by James Layne. A few years later (even though they were still printing this book), the same publisher flipped & modified this art to put on the cover of Hilary Hilton's Sing A Song Of Sex ("The world of melody makers, where a beautiful woman quickly learns how to buy that big break--She's long-legged, sloe-eyed and her black hair reaches down to here. She's beautiful, sensual and talented. She's queen of the folk singers. She has the morals of an alley cat !").

Ernest Chiriacka, AN OLD MYSTERY WITH NO SOLUTION, (ESQUIRE GIRL CALENDAR 1952 (Jan)) - "Barring earthquake or revolution, // Here's a girl with a new resolution: // She's determined to be just what you see - // An old mystery with no solution." - It should be noted that more than 10 years later, our lass here makes another appearence, re-painted with almost no modification, on the cover of the racy LUST FOR LACE by 'Jeff King' (Ray Haydock) - that artist was uncredited - makes you wonder if Chiriaka was at work there too . . .

A couple of years later, Softcover Library (what Beacon became) re-used the art on Call-Girl Wives by Alex Carter ("Their husbands thought they worked at legitimate jobs... // A novel about women hooked on status--and paying for it by sex !"). Recently the original painting of this art, unsigned, has been auctioned at Heritage revealing a typed sticker on the back of the canvas that indicates that it is for the Brian Black book and was painted by Stanley Borack -- without a detailed provenance of the painting we are not yet accepting Borack as the final artist attribution for the piece. (Note that,in a number of places, this piece has also been displayed on the interweb as being alternatively painted by Victor Olson.

Ernest Chiriacka, DEAD END - "Two crooked cops, a red-hot blonde, and a million in cold cash" - The Pyramid Books paperback release of this story by Ed Lacy ("author of Room To Swing, winner of the 1958 Mystery Writers Of America 'Edgar' Award").

A handful of years later, the publisher simplified the art for another edition ("From out of his buried past came a sadistic killer who wanted blood as much as he wanted money... // The mad avenger is frighteningly believable, and Rabe's narrative is tight and nerve straining."). Chiriacka utilized his pseudonym 'Darcy' for this piece.
------------------------------------------------ MEL CRAIR ------------------------------------------------

Mel Crair, REAL MEN 1967, (MAN'S LIFE 1967-Oct) - "Alone With Eight Love-Mad Hunting Girls Of Japan! // The 73 Yank POWs who survived the Nude Girl Tortures Of Camp 'Agony'// The Joy-Girl House Of Swindling Blondes! // Private Nudist Clubs Spreading Into Your Home Town // Men Needed For Nymphomaniacs--Can You Qualify ?" - 2.5 years later, the same publisher re-used this art on the cover of REAL MEN 1970-Apr ("The Commies told the American spy: You'll Never Get Out Of Warsaw, Alive! // Vice Girls Who Let You Love Now--Pay Later! // How You Can Become A Master At Sex! // The Gestapo Pig Who Wanted A Woman A Day! // 24-hours of hell--Life Inside A Woman's Prison !") and only a year later were using it again on TRUE MEN STORIES 1971-June ("Claws At My Throat Hungry For My Blood // Women Behind Bars--how they make out without men // The Commies Our Mapping Our Coastal Defenses--and we're letting them get away with it // Girl Gamblers--You can have their bodies--so long as they get your cash").

Now it was their turn to inflict the suffering! // Woelz realized that the girl meant what she said. Terrified he sank to his knees, wondering if he could yet pull his Luger.").

Mel Crair, QUEEN OF PAIN, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1965-Mar) - "Queen Of Pain // The horror holiday of two English girls who fell victim too The Harem Lord Of Linya // Where you can find The Lost Treasure Of The Crusaders // Exposing the vice operations in The Most Wide Open City In The World" - The following year the image was used as secondary art inset on the cover of TRUE MEN STORIES 1966-May ("All the women in the prison camp were at my service, as long as I could satisfy the Nazi Princess Of Pain"). Another couple years again sees the art on the cover of REAL MEN 1968-Oct ("Sex Fun...The Way The Modern Swingers Do! // 'We'll Keep Killing Nazis Until The Last Man Is Dead!' // Real Men' exclusive survey--Love And Vice Habits Of American Couples // Two Australian girls Stripped--Raped And Held Captive by an Asian bandit chief // Hell Swim Through A Sea Of Fire !"). Mel Crair is only one artist that I've seen get credited with this popular work, but certainly the decider for us is that the particular German officer standing at attention in the rear can also be viewed in the same pose in more than one other painting by Crair.

Mel Crair, BIG ADVENTURE 1960, (BIG ADVENTURE 1960-Nov) - "The Man Who Tried To Capture America--A master spy and his assignment that changed the course of history // Revealed:The Intimate Story Of Female Wrestling // His very name means slaughter--The Doctor Who Lived On Death! // A detailed guidebook to the vice centers of America--The Sin Circuit" - Several years later the publisher utilized a fuller image of the art on Man's Prime 1966-Mar ("The pain-loving psychos who like to watch men die--Murder--Just For Fun! // Prostitutes Are Taking Over The Suburbs // The Screaming Killers Of The China Seas // The joy-house cameras that trap love-hungry GI's--The Dirty Picture Plot Of The Berlin Vice Girls // An authority gives the reasons why it's no sin to Enjoy Sex Before Marriage !").

Mel Crair, MASTERS OF MURDER, (REAL MEN 1961-Feb) - "More than 300 men have died, victims of the Masters Of Murder // The underground army of Red recruiters . . . The Call-Girl Traitors Of Berlin // The true story of small-town vice: Sex For Sale" - Despite the suggestion in the cover layout that our title is the correct one for this image, it doesn't really seem to match the story inside - well, actually, it doesn't match any of the others better. I've seen one knowledgeable commenter idenitfy this as Crair's, but I'm not certain if that was backed up by, say, a contents-page credit or something. (I've seen one identification of this as Vic Prezio's, but I suspect that that is a confusion around Prezio clearly having done the cover of *RUGGED* MEN 1961-Feb.)

Mel Crair, TORTURING TARTS OF FRANKFURT, (BIG ADVENTURE 1961-Mar) - "The sight of pain made her shriek with pleasure...Torturing Tarts Of Frankfurt // Exposing the city where vice is the number one tourist attraction--Sex Is Their Business // All around me were smears of blood, shredded fragments of the dying and the dead--They Screamed All Night // Bonus:How To Cash In On The Horses" - The publishers re-used the art as an interior illustration two years later inside MAN'S ADVENTURE 1963-July to accompany Tony Sorrentino's story, A Whip For Her Passion ("She tempted the men with her body, but when they answered her plea she answered them with terror !"). Four years later it was on the cover again, on REAL MEN 1967-Sept ("The 18 Rangers Who Kidnapped The Nazi's Top Rocket Expert! // Exposing:Nationwide Network Of Vice-Clubs! // Satisfy Three Nymphos And Earn Your Weight In Emeralds! // Special Sex Tricks That Double A Vice-Girl's Take !"). They used it again three years later on the cover of TRUE MEN STORIES 1970-Oct ("Human blood--She bathed in it...She drank it...They called her The Vampire Of Csejthe Castle! // Saturday Night Is Orgy Night To A Million American Swingers! // The accident that set a free fall record...56,000 Feet Straight Down! // Two curvy young tourists Captured And Raped By A Mountain Bandit Chief! // Women Who Pay For Sex !"). And again three years later, on the cover of REAL MEN 1973-Sept ("The $20,000,000 Treasure Of The Bloodstained Pig // Naked Curves--Yours,Just For The Looking // Swinging Resorts Where Studs And Nymphs Work To Wear Each Other Down! // Girls, kidnapped in Europe, sold as slaves to The Brothels Of The East // Super-Sex:American Men With Two 'Wives' To Bed Down !").
------------------------------------------------ HOWELL DODD ------------------------------------------------

Howell Dodd, BRING HER IN ALIVE, (POLICE DETECTIVE 1953-Aug) - "Bring Her In Alive! // How do they get away with murder? Loopholes For Killers // The Law Officer's favorite magazine"

Howell Dodd, THE HAND THAT CARESSES CAN ALSO KILL, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1950-Sept) - "The Hand That Caresses Can Also Kill! // Unmasked! The racketeers that prey on America's most beautiful girls! 'I Was A Model For Sale!'" - Years later, the art was seen again on Beacon's paperback release of the Orrie Hitt story, THE WIDOW ("She showed him the way...the wrong way! The savage story of a man gone wrong and the woman who led him astray !").

Howell Dodd, HOT MONEY HONEYS, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1952-Jan) - "They look innocent-but the know all the tricks in the trade!--They do it for greed-they do it for love!--Hauls from hold-ups they change for honey dollars!--Exposing Hot Money Honeys! // Fatal Loves Of The Ravishing Redhead!"

Howell Dodd, THE TEMPTRESS OF TOBACCO ROAD, (ALL TRUE FACT CRIME CASES 1952-Apr) - "Report of the nation's top true-crime investigators! // Detroit,MICH.-Blood On The Skirts Of The Dancing Doll! // Chicago, ILL.-Love-Trap For The Weekend Wife! // Washington County,VA.-The Temptress Of Tobacco Road! // Reno,Nevada-The Guy With The Gleam In His Eye! // Clinton,OKLA.-Woman Wanted-Wealthy And Willing To Die! // Plus other features coast-to-coast!--Racket Expose-Tip Off Girl!-She's the eyeas and ears of the Mob!" - There is a printer-proof that contains this image and its owner identified the artist as Dodd.

Howell Dodd, DOUBLE-TROUBLE DARLING, (ALL TRUE FACT CRIME CASES 1952-Feb) - "Double-Trouble Darling // Every husband was my prey! Every wife was my target! Every kiss meant shakedown dough for little me! A starting exposé torn from the blackmail diary of a beautiful woman! If you value your good name and the reputation of your family see page 14, and never forget its revealing lessions !" - There is a printer-proof that contains this image and its owner identified the artist as Dodd.

Howell Dodd, ROOM AND DAME - The art seems to have first appeared on this Quarter Books 1950 paperback by Gerald Foster ("author of The Virgin And The Barfly") and then graced the cover of CRIME YEARBOOK 1951 ("A sensational exposé 'I Was Queen Of The Stag Party Strippers!' // A collection of the year's most thrilling fact cases").

Howell Dodd, CRIMSON CRIMES OF THE LUSTFUL LADIES, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1950-Jan) - "Seeing the policeman, the scarlet temptress turned and fled! Crimson Crimes Of The Lustful Ladies !"

Howell Dodd, A GUNMAN'S DAME NEVER DIES IN BED, (WOMEN IN CRIME 1950-Nov) - "A Gunman's Dame Never Dies In Bed! // 'I worked the stag party racket!'--A Strip-Tease Dame Tells All !"

Howell Dodd, FAST-LIVING LADIES DIE IN A HURRY!, (LINE-UP DETECTIVE CRIME 1951-Apr) - "Fast-Living Ladies Die In A Hurry! // A Blonde,A Bar,And A Beast !"

Howell Dodd, THE COME-ON BLONDE, (WOMEN IN CRIME 1951-Jan) - "Desire,Death And The Come-On-Blonde! // There's a lesson to be learned from--Pleasure Girls Are Big Business!"

Howell Dodd, I WAS A HIDEOUT HONEY, (WOMEN IN CRIME 1951-Sept) - "I Was A Hideout Honey // 'Pay up-and I'll shut up!' she said. Blackmailing Baby Beware! // Death Has Loving Arms !"

Howell Dodd, PUNKISM, (LINE-UP DETECTIVE CRIME 1953-Feb) - "Hoodlumism!--Mugging!--Dope!--Punkism!--The new wave of teenage terror! // Dallas, Texas - The Love Burgler!"

Howell Dodd, PARK AVENUE JEWEL ROBBERIES, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1962-July) - "The story of the crooked dames behind the sensational Park Avenue Jewel Robberies! // Slow Death For A Fast Woman"

Howell Dodd, FROM MUSKRAT TO MINK TO MURDER, (TRUE FACT CRIME 1953-June) - "She traveled the whole bloody road...From Muskrat To Mink To Murder // The case that rocked Arizona!--Stone Cold Wife!"

Howell Dodd, THE SHILL GIRL, (POLICE DETECTIVE CASES 1952-Feb) - "She comes from the pent house, the dance hall or the gutter...She's a model, or a waitress, or a dame at the bar...She's young and pretty, but her tricks are old and dirty...It's not you that she wants, it's your bankroll! Watch out for the Shill Girl--The come on girl of crime // Dames Are A Killer's Dish" - There is a printer-proof that contains this image and its owner identified the artist as Dodd.

Howell Dodd, THE RISE OF THE HOODLUMS, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1953-May) - "Los Angeles-St. Louis-Denver-Philadelphia-New Orleans-Cleveland-San Francisco-New York-The truth behind The Rise Of The Hoodlums !" - This art was cropped in half and re-used on the same magazine line for the cover of 1955-June ("Case! The Hot-Blooded Blonde And The Cold-Blooded Killer! // Exposé! Girl Alcoholics !") and then once more for the cover of 1968-Apr ("Girls On Lover's Lane! // Secret Sex Criminals! 'She had no clothes on so I had to kill her!' // A brutal strangling...the nude and ravished bodies of two sisters...another dismembered torso!...'Catch The Sex Fiend Loose In Chicago!'").

Howell Dodd, FINGER GIRL, (TRUE CRIME CASES 1951-Sept) - "Sensational Expose! To some girls it's a job! To others it's a racket! Finger Girl !" - I don't think there's been a direct connection made between Dodd and this painting, but those that comment authoratatively make that attribution.

Howell Dodd, MY LOVE LIES COLD, (POLICE DETECTIVE 1953-June) - "Shocking case of the bride who vanished...My Love Lies Cold! // You could be the next victim-The Racket In Fatherless Babies !"

Howell Dodd, GIRL ON PAROLE, (ALL TRUE FACT CRIME CASES 1953-Feb) - "The human tragedy of life in prison without bars--Girl On Parole // A picture story - The Young Criminal !" - The publisher continually experimented with how to display the magazine's title, this time losing all the words except for 'CRIME' in it's red box.

Howell Dodd, HUNDRED-DOLLAR-A-NIGHT CALL GIRL, (LINE-UP DETECTIVE CASES 1950-Feb) - "I Am A Hundred-Dollar-A-Night Call Girl-It's an easy life, good times, gay parties, rich men...or is it ?" - The very same year saw an excerpted image of our heroine here on the cover of LOVE LIFE OF A HOLLYWOOD MISTRESS ("She was youg beautiful and willing...") by Florence Stonebraker ("author of Reno Tramp"). A recent auctioneer of this painting identified its artist as Dodd. Note that this is a tighter cropped image of our heroine in the back of the paddy wagon.

Howell Dodd, ONE WOMAN TO LOVE...ONE WOMAN TO KILL, (SMASH DETECTIVE-CRIME CASES 1951-Jan) - "One woman to love...one woman to kill // Exposé Of The Month! The 'B' Girl racket--Men Who Kiss And Dare Not Tell!--The inside story of the girls who promise passion and pleasure-and pay off with knockout drops !" - After its initial magazine appearence, the art was later modified (substituting drug paraphernalia) and re-used as the cover of THE NEEDLE, the Beacon Books paperback release of Sloane M. Britain's story ("Man or woman, sister or brother: her lust knew no bounds! Pitilessly exposes the depravity of the true addict, who takes lovers without number, performs every heinous vice, in order to embrace her one true love...the needle !"). It was that cover seen featured in BAD GIRLS NEED LOVE TO

Howell Dodd, INVITATION TO DOOM, (SMASH DETECTIVE CASES 1950-May)

Howell Dodd, DANGEROUS BLONDE, (BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1951-July) - "Dangerous Blonde // Exposed! A beautuful babe who Loved 'Em Up To Shake Them Down // Why is the wife always the last to know ?" - Note that in the lower right corner it looks like some title had been painted in there that the editor did not do a great job of painting out.

Howell Dodd, A CHEAP DATE, (SMASH DETECTIVE CASES 1965-July) - "A Cheap Date Can Cost A Life! // You'll find the answer to the strangest riddle in modern crime history on page 22 !" - When this painting came to auction, Heritage would not hazard an attribution. While seeing an identification of this as being by Edmond Gray is not uncommon, I note that a company selling a recent Dodd calendar with 12 of his paintings included this as one of them. I'm going to go with that latter attribution for the moment.

Howell Dodd, UNCONVENTIONAL WOMEN - Note that the work is signed 'DuBose', which is a pseudonym Dodd was said to employ (fully Hal DuBose, I believe). I will speculate that one area in which he employed it was when he did separate illustrations for different articles within the same magazine - which leads me to expect that this inkwash will ultimately be found to be a magazine illustration.

Howell Dodd, NO TIME FOR SLEEP - "A blonde, a brunette, and a man spell trouble !" - The Venus Books paperback release of this story by Amos Hatter.

Howell Dodd, FRISCO DAME - "She made love a paying proposition !" - The Quarter Books digest release of this story by Florence Stonebraker ("author of the the thrilling Love Life Of A Hollywood Mistress"). The art appeared later on the Spanish book La Mujer Del Anillo which translates to [The Woman From The Ring], but this is reportedly their translation of Come Night-Come Desire by 'David Wade' (Norman A. Daniels).

Howell Dodd, BODIES ON FIRE - "An original uncensored tale of flaming passions! Excitingly illustrated !" - The Exotic Novel paperback-digest release of this story by 'Joan Sherman' (Peggy Gaddis)("author of Suzy Needs A Man--Men Call Her 'Tramp'"). While I've seen knowledgible sources credit this work to Dodd, the name of Rudy Nappi also gets associated with this painting sometimes, but I feel his works just have a pinch more reality to them than Dodd's, who seems to have done additional acknowledged pieces for this publisher.

Howell Dodd, STREET GIRL - "A bad girl makes a good mistriss... 'Street Girl' is must reading'--A thrill-packed uncensored novel by Albert L. Quant" - The Quarter Books paperback release.

Howell Dodd, HONKY TONK GIRL - "It was the last stop for the scum of humanity on the road to Hell !" - The Falcon Books digest-paperback release of this story by Charles Beckman Jr. The same year saw our temptress excerpted and appearing on the cover of WOMAN IN CRIME 1953-Nov ("Two sloe-eyed native beauties...shady intigue...and sudden death! An exotic true story of an island adventurer...Man Of Affairs // Doorway To Fame--The tragic case of glamorous Madeline Webb...dancer, model and accomplice in murder !"). The first cover was featured in BAD GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO.

Howell Dodd, WHIP-HAND! - "A seething turmoil of passion, violence and hatred // Another brand new novel by Hodge Evens--author of 'YellowHead' and 'Three For Passion'" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by 'Hodge Evans' (Dudley Dean McGaughey). The artwork was re-used later by the Spanish publisher Pandora for the paperback release of their own Ricky Drayton's Un Cadaver De Visita [A Visiting Corpse]. The first cover was featured in BAD GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO.

Howell Dodd, SLEEPY TIME HONEY - The Rainbow Books paperback release of this story by Kathryn Culver (originally titled Too Smart For Love).

Howell Dodd, LAY DOWN AND DIE! - "When Johnny Murdock, tough cop, meets Lady Mayhem, tougher dame, the result is dynamite...and death !" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by 'Mark Reed' (Norman Daniels) ("author of The Scarlet Bride").

Howell Dodd, PLAY ROUGH! - "A sensational novel of a rat who wanted a woman-to share with his underworld rivals! // A new novel by Rick Wayne" - The Rainbow Books paperback release of this story. The artwork was re-used later by the Spanish publisher Pandora for the paperback release of their translation of Sinners Wild, here entitled Cuatro Pecadoros [Four Sinners], by 'Mark Reed' (Norman Daniels).

Howell Dodd, TEASE THE WILD FLAME! - "A whirlpool of love, hate, desire ... and death !" - The Rainbow Books paperback release of this story by Mark Reed ("author of Street Of Dark Desires").

Howell Dodd, CASE OF THE CANCELLED REDHEAD! - "Dames, death and a Spanish duchess" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by Hamlin Daly. Someone re-painted Dodd's art for the cover of the Spanish traslation La Pelirroja Asesinada. Also Dodd's painting, in its current state, no longer has the impressive hat that we see on the book cover.

Howell Dodd, THE LONG NIGHT - "A novel of hasty marriage...and hastier death !" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by Bryce Walton. The Spanish publisher Pandora used the art on their translation of the novel, but also used it on their release of Paddy Norman's Las Hermanas Se Odion [The Sisters Hate Each Other]. Note that the publisher Phantom Books had someone redraw the art and used that for the cover of their release of Bryce Walton's The Hate Killer.

Howell Dodd, LOVERS DON'T SLEEP - "Meet Suzi, the girl who makes divorce a pleasure" - The Exotic digest-paperback release of this story by Laura Hale ("author of Wild Is The Woman").

Howell Dodd, HER CANDLE BURNS HOT - "On her wedding night a strange man walked in... // An original novel, completely unexpurgated" - The Rainbow Books paperback release of this story by Hodge Evans.

Howell Dodd, JOURNEY INTO ECTASY - "She was beautiful, bold--and bad !" - The Venus Books paperback release of this story by Albert L. Quandt ("author of Pick-Up Alley").

Howell Dodd, PAINTED LIPS - "Even a bad girl has her good moments..." - The Venus Books digest-paperback release of this story by Peggy Gaddis ("author of Emotions Of Fire").

Howell Dodd, YELLOW-HEAD! - "Another brand new novel from the pen of Hodge Evans who thrilled you with 'Her Candle Burns Hot!' and 'Three For Passion'" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by 'Hodge Evans' (Dudley Dean McGaughey).

Howell Dodd, THREE FOR PASSION - "An emotional whirlpool of crime, passion and love !" - The Falcon Books paperback release of this story by 'Hodge Evans' (Dudley Dean McGaughey)("author of Her Candle Burns Hit!"). The artwork was re-used later by the Spanish publisher Pandora for the paperback release of their translation of a Michael Storme tale, No Me Digas Adios, Nena [Baby Don't Say Goodbye].

Howell Dodd, SEX WAS NOT THE MOTIVE, (SPECIAL DETECTIVE 1951-June) - "Sex Was Not The Motive! //Who refers playboys to call girls?--Who steers suckers to gambling joints?--Who directs customers to dope peddlers?--The beautiful blonde on page 10 !" - It's only conjecture that this cover art associates with this titled story.

Howell Dodd, LADY WITH A PAST - "She was a mistress in name only... // A thrilling, original novel" - The Venus Books paperback release of this story by Amos Hatter ("author of No Time For Sleep").

Howell Dodd, THE GIRL WITH THE ROVING EYE, (POLICE DETECTIVE 1950-Jan) - "She was his woman...and he was ready to kill to keep her! read The Girl With The Roving Eye" - The art was re-used five years later for the same magazine, POLICE DETECTIVE 1959-Apr ("True Book-Length Bonus: In For Life by Tom Runyon-Convict 17602--Tom Runyon was of bank robbery and second-degree murder. He is guilty of both, and he is in for life. This is his story, written by himself. // Rape-Slayer And The Desert Nude // The World's Dirtiest Job...Vice-Dick! // A Needle Full Of Death // Camera!...Action!...Strangle Her! // Contains the new secret ingrediant...XRP-96").

Howell Dodd, I WORKED THE RACKETS, (WOMEN IN CRIME 1952-Jan) - "A con-woman tells all! A startling true life expose of sharp operators and slick come-on girls who fleece the bright-light suckers! 'I Worked The Rackets-And Lost!' // A Gun Moll Is Dynamite !"

Howell Dodd, DANCE-HALL DAME, (WOMEN IN CRIME 1951-May) - "It's tough for the dance-hall dame who has to look good, talk good and be anything but good if she wants to last in this dog-eat-dog game! // The Corpse In Passion's Cradle"

Howell Dodd, THE SAINT AND SINNERS MURDER CASE, (POLICE DETECTIVE CASES 1950-Oct) - "The Saint And Sinners Murder Case! // A daring exposé of America's No.1 youth problem--Drug Addicts--Shocking facts! Startling figures! A terrifying true story told in words and pictures" - On this magazine was the 'original' version of this painting, surviving to be seen only on that cover and its next usage by the publisher, on BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1954-July ("First she lied to shield him...then she talked and doomed him...the killer learned the hard way that...A Good Dame Is A Bad Alibi !"). That company then altered the work to be used several years later on the cover of their POLICE DETECTIVE 1958-July ("The psycho's strange urge...'I'll Kiss You And Kill You' // The Day The Desperado Died--G-Man vs. Gunman"). A year later, Magnet Books give the girl & the room a major makeover for the cover their paperback release of Martin Ryan's MAN-HUNGRY ("'Sure I lust for love,' she smiled. 'But what's more I also love lust!'"). That remains the 'final' version of this painting through present-day, though we keep seeing it on ABOUT FACE-Frank Kane's Johnny Liddell story from Mystery House, E. Phillips Oppenheim's The EVIL SHEPHERD, and even a blank diary/journal that fancies itself "SHE TRIED TO BE GOOD-The sensational memoir of a suburban hussy--A journal for the truly shameless".

Howell Dodd, THE MEN SHE KNEW - "They had her number - And they used it !" - The Venus Books paperback release of this story by 'Norman Bligh' (William Arthur Neubauer ("Author of The Naked Night"). Two years later, this art was seen again, on the cover of MAN-HUNGRY, by 'Mitchell Coleman' (William Arthur Neubauer)(the original title having been Fast, Loose And Lovely)("The secret life of a woman who loved many men!"). The original cover was featured in THE GREAT AMERICAN PIN-UP (who, along with Heritage Auctions, credited it to Rudy Nappi). It's not certain, but people much more experienced than me want to attribute this to Dodd. Increasing confusion is that a different painting by Dodd was used again, after its original appearance, on the cover of a different book, also titled Man-Hungry. (The appearance of the original painting is different enough from the resulting cover that I have to imagine that there have been some modifications to it.)

Howell Dodd, BIG-TIME GAMBLERS NEED A GIRL LIKE ME, (SPECIAL DETECTIVE 1952-Apr) - "The girl behind the bars said-'Okay, I'll talk-Here's the True story-the Whole story...but dont use my name...Working the rackets looked like a soft touch-you cooked up suntan in Miami and martini's in Chicago-There were vacations in Los Angeles and the races in Saratoga...But there was a danger too, like the time a hood sent half a dozen slugs through the window of our car, and the time Lydia Davies tossed a bottle of acid at my head. I tried to quit once, but the boss' voice had a wicked edge when he told me *Nobody resigns after they start working for me. They ony die on the job...*-- 'Big-Time Gamblers Need A Girl Like Me! // She Danced To The Song Of Death !" - When the printer-proof came up for auction, Heritage wanted to attribute the art to Dodd - seems like his work to us too, so we'll accept that for the time being.

Howell Dodd, A GAL-A GAT-AND A WILD YOUTH GANG, (ALL TRUE FACT CRIME CASES 1951-June) - "A Gal...A Gat...And A Wild Youth Gang! // Exposé! She dealt in hot jewels, hot dough and hot blood...Girl Fence!" - This entire magazine also seems to have appeared in New Zealand as TRUE DETECTIVE POLICE CASES #16. The very next year this art was re-used as the cover of CRIME ANNUAL 1952, ("Top book of the year! // Jampacked with all true, official police files !"). On display here is the preliminary cover printer's-proof of the Annual.

Howell Dodd, SHE COULDN'T CRY HELP, (POLICE DETECTIVE 1953-Dec) - "Clever police work supplied the words that trapped two silent killers...and solved a baffling murder! She Couldn't Cry Help !"

Howell Dodd, FREE AND EASY - "She wanted love...not marriage !" - The Ecstasy paperback release of this story by Luther Gordon (originally titled After Passion). &nbs; The cover was featured in BAD GIRLS NEED LOVE TOO.
------------------------------------------------ CLARENCE DOORE ------------------------------------------------

Clarence Doore, DEATH CRAWLED UP MY BODY, (CHAMPION FOR MEN 1959-Sept) - "Death Crawled Up My Body // Cannibal From Maine // Book Bonus--History's Strangest Gamble--Inside the plush casino, six men played a game of cards-to the winner would go the spoils...the six most beautiful women in Europe !" - The magazine cover was featured in the collection MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Clarence Doore, BRAVE 1957, (BRAVE 1952-Feb) - "Is Your Girl The 'Hustler' Type? // plus The Worst Journey In The World - You Too Can Be A Strong Man - I Was Brainwashed! and many other thrilling features" - The cover blurbs would suggest that this art does not associate with any of the magazine's contents.

Clarence Doore, POLYNESIAN LOVE TRAP, (RUGGED MEN 1959-Mar) - "Fire Ants Ate Me Alive! // Weird! True! The Man Who Really Was Dracula! // A vice-investigator's report--The Harlots Wanted My Blood // Exposed! Sin, swindle and blackmail, spawned by the Kinsey Report!: The Racket In Phony Sex Research !" - Since we detect no association with anything in this magazine, we are pulling our title from the subsequest flipped re-use of the art on the cover of BOLD MEN! 1961-June ("Prof. Reinish's scientific expedition came to a horrible end when he fell into the ... Polynesian Love Trap! // The incredible fate our embassy man in Laos lived to tell about-at the hands of ... Ani Sooh's Brigade Of Brainwashing Beauties! // Original paperback book bonus: Swamp Girl // Joan Collins--Bold Men's Favorites"). The artist credit appears on the contents page of the first magazine.

Clarence Doore, MUMMIES OF PERU, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1958-Mar) - "Weird! True! I found the Mummies Of Peru // Paris--Still The Most // Sun,Sex And Sanity--exposing the rackets in nudism // I faced a million tons of hell...Hard Bullets And Soft Flesh! // They're after your blood! Crimes Of Our Knife-Happy Medicos !" - A year-or-so later, this appeared as an illustration for Val Harmond's story Kiss Of The Cobra in BATTLE CRY 1960-Jan ("One man had already felt the poisoned fangs of the temple's sacred cobra. Now it was my turn to die!)") which then explictly credited Doore for the painting. Two years after that, it was utilized. altered, illustrating a story in ALL MAN 1962-Jan, by Alexander Van Rees (The Scent Of Living Flesh - "Hungry and crazed with pain, a cobra was on the prowl. And all that stood between the woman and death was a puppy! // Mrs. Brown was afraid to scream. The least movement might cause the snake to strike."). Only two months later, it appears again on the cover of MAN'S ADVENTURE 1962-Mar ("The unbelievable but true story of how the Army saved the Marines--The Bloody Beaches Of Guam // Torture and death in New Guinea--Showdown On Cannibal River // A report on the love-happy housewives of subrbia--Nymphos With A Ranch House // Revealing a shocking medical secret--You Can Catch Cancer // How Normal Is Your Sex-Life according to the letter of the law"). Less than a year later, the publisher, definitely reprints Harmond's story in MAN'S ADVENTURE 1963-Jan, now entitled The Hooded Mouth Of Hell ("Before us was the cobra, his long and evil body swaying slowly, his sharp fangs poised to bite and kill!").

Clarence Doore, THE ISLAND THAT LIVED FOR DEATH, (MAN;S ADVENTURE 1958-Oct) - "Strange! Exotic! True! The Island That Lived For Death! // Exclusive! from inside an Arabian harem--Pictures That Could Never Be Printed Before // The Vigilante That Wove His Own Noose! // The Stag Party: The Young Bride's Best Friend !" - This art was excerpted a year later to accompany a story in MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959-Oct (The Man Who Humbled Gengis Kahn - "Rivers ran blood; the earth stank of death and still the Persians fought the Golden Horde").

Clarence Doore, THE CUTEST CANNIBALS IN AFRICA, (ALL MAN 1959-Mar) - "Revealed at last! The Day The Japs Raided Los Angeles // Love House On The Run! Sergeant Warner's bloody ordeal of prostitutes, torture and death // Queen Of The Paris Jails--an incredible story of primitive lust! // The Sex Drug In You Kitchen" - We actually adopted our title here from a subsequent use of the art to accompany the story inside BATTLE CRY 1960-Mar by Piet Van Hoorgan ("They thought it would be fun to tease the 'darling' little [...]-they wouldn't believe that baboons can be more deadly than lions!"). A couple of years later, the same publisher re-used this art for their magazine MEN IN CONFLICT 1962-Aug ("Revealed at last! The Day The Japs Raided Los Angeles // She ran the most uninhibited bordello in America--The Blood-Drenched Nympho Of Houston // America's Greatest Sex Problem:Frigid Women // The True Facts About Legal Gambling"). Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES did feature a cropped magazine cover sporting this art.

Clarence Doore, SLAVE KING OF AFRICA, (CHAMPION FOR MEN 1959-Oct) - "The tortured moans of captive women were music to his ears...Slave King Of Africa // They use their bodies as bait on the masters of Red terror--Bat Women Of Budapest! // Shark Fighting Is My Business! // The true story of the most fantastic episode in history--The Year They Outlawed Love !" - In the following year, this art was excerpted to accompany a story in SAVAGE ADVENTURE 1961-Feb, by Henry DaValais ('Love Hungry Killer Of Brazil' "I could have my life or my woman...not both // The only law of the jungle is survival")' More years later, a small image of this art, tightly-cropped, was used as secondary art on the cover of MAN'S BEST 1966-June ("The Savage Killer Who Plotted A Night Of Mass-Murder // Special Feature--An Abortionist Tells Why He Has Taken Up A Life Of 'Crime' // When a vice girl goes on strike, she takes her life in her hands--Blood Was The Payoff For A Prostitute! // The true report of a syndicate victim--'I Was Forced To Make Sex Films!' // The 44 Nympho Call-Girls Who Gave Their Bodies To Liberate Paris !").

The original cover itself was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Clarence Doore, REAL MEN 1959, (REAL MEN 1959-Feb) - "The World's Most Beautiful Nude; and the man who made her! // Bonus Exposé! The Girls Who Trade Sex For Death! The amazing story of the Kremlin's army of gorgeous spies...The girls who give their bodies to the oil-rich sheiks of bloody Araby // The Day I Was Roasted Alive! // the truth about the Big Leagues--Baseball's Phoney Record Book!" - This cover art would seem not to associate to any of the contents of the magazine. The cover itself was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Clarence Doore, THE TWO-DOLLAR-A-DATE QUEEN OF BUCHENWALD, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959-Dec) - "The Two-Dollar-A-Date Queen Of Buchenwald--The amazing story of Gerta Holland, the deadliest killer of World War II // A doctor's prescription for Seven Steps To Better Sex! // The Red-Fanged Killer Of Kobuk--I faced the beast the natives swore couldn't be killed // Bordello On The 12-Mile Limit--On a clear day you can see wildest hell-ship that ever thumbed its nose at the U.S.A." - This art was re-used 2.5 years later for the same magazine, MAN'S ADVENTURE 1962-July ("A close-up view of paradise...The Town Where The Girls Go Naked // Miracle escape from red terror--Castro Had Me Marked For Murder // The inside story of America's no. 1 sex circuit--The National Exchange Of Wife Swapping // Seven million American men have already faced disaster. Who'll be the next victim? You Are Marked For Blackmail") and then less than 2 years more, the publisher re-used it on MEN IN CONFLICT 1965-Apr ("'Strip Honey....If You Want To Leave This Room Alive!!!'--A true story of violence from behind the Iron Curtain // Their only choice Eat Human Flesh Or Starve // A psychologist says Sex Shows Should Be Legal! // Where You Can Buy Anything In Vice if you have the cash in your pocklet").

Clarence Doore, THE MAN WHO STOPPED WWII, (BATTLE CRY 1958-Dec) - "Life or death, for the entire world, depended on the guts of one two-stripe dogface...The Man Who Stopped WWII // The saga of the Philappine guerillas--Blood-Bath On Mindanao // Target for V-bombs...and soldiers on leave--Soho:Hunting Ground Of The Piccadilly Commando // The G.I. husband of a Japanese bride writes: For Real Joy In Marriage Give Me An American Girl's Brand Of Love"

V-Girls! // Phoney Fatherhood: the racket that bled our G.I.'s dry !" - We've pulled our title from the second use of this art which was 4 years later, on the same publication, BATTLE CRY 1962-Apr ("Sex Slaves Of The Wehrmacht // A million G.I.'s will never forget Europe's Street Of Vice! // A story of the 7th Army in Germany today--If The Reds Attack ...! // Tarawa Island Of Slaughter // The day we didn't win the war- Bug-Out At The Yalu"). And while its location is still unknown here, this art was also excerpted for a story in another Stanley publication, by Sigrud Sikseilnan, called She Sold Her Body For Freedom ("Everyday I wander along the Russian-Finish border trading my flesh to the coarse and brutal communists!").

Clarence Doore, REAL MEN JULY 1958, (REAL MEN 1958-July) - "The Love-Paradise That Went Up In Smoke!--Dames,dough and dreams...I had them all...until the volcano blew its top! // Our Forgotten Heroes--exposing the scandalous treatment of our GIs...right here in the U.S.A.! // Wells-Fargo--The story that is the West // An amazing adventure from inside Red China--The Spy Trap They Baited With Dames" - You can see that the subject of the cover art does not align with anything detailed there.

Clarence Doore, VENGEANCE OF THE BUSH DEVIL, (ALL MAN 1959-July) - "Bonus novelette: Vengeance Of The Bush Devil // Yours for the asking...Love Potion At Your Corner Bar! // Pictorial preview: Dream Cars Of Tomorrow // Frozen hell on the river--The Night The 'Virgin Queen' Was Wrecked"

Clarence Doore, MASSACRE ON DEAD MAN'S RIDGE, (ALL MAN 1960-Feb) - "In this issue: They're using the world's oldest profession to . . . Destroy America !-Sex is the bait for traitors ! // Want to know what it's like to share your wife with a hundred thousand men ?-I Married A Stripper ! // Could you use one million dollars ?-An expert tells you where it is and how you get it, in Treasure Is My Business // Blood and violence in Korea-Massacre On Dead Man's Ridge" - This art was then re-used a little more than two years later for the cover of BATTLE CRY 1962-Aug with blurbs "They made the name of Nuremburg a synonym for hell on earth . . . The Sex-Mad Harlots Who Fought Hitler // 40 helpless GI's . . . to protect their lives was to risk an entire beachhead-The Night Of Hell That Saved Anzio // I knew the blonde was pulling a triple-cross. But with her looks who cared . . . General Mings Last Raid // A German major with a heart? Yep . . . it really happened in . . . The Best Damn POW Camp In History" - And then used once more for another cover of that same magazine series almost five years later, BATTLE CRY 1967-June with blurbs "One man-30 girls-I Was The Guide For A White Slave Safari ! // The Prostitue Who Dealt In Sin Drugs And Murder ! // Sex City--Every Man's Paradise--Miami Beach ! // Special Feature: Is One Man Enough For Any Woman ?" - These cover images have no signature visible. Inside the original ALL MAN magazine, there is no cover artist credit and Vic Prezio is listed as having produced two interior illustrations. So, while I had seen this cover illustration also credited to Prezio, I thought to myself, "Self, her face has a rather Clarence Doore look about it", so I lacked confidence it really was a Prezio painting. Now that I see that the Taschen book MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POST-WAR AMERICA instead credits Clarence Doore with it, I'm going to side with them.

Clarence Doore, BLUE MURDER WEARS HORNS, (MAN'S ACTION 1959-Sept) - "Blue Murder Wears Horns // I Saw The Fertility Orgy Of The Nhanga Pygmies // The Paradise Maidens Of Snowbound Jones // Nine Sex Pitfalls You Face !" - I had seen this image credited to Vic Prezio, but subsequently saw Taschen's 'MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POST-WAR AMERICA book say that Doore executed it and I agree that the 'style' indeed looked closer to Doore's work.

Clarence Doore, QUICKSAND, (GUSTO 1957-Oct) - "Quicksand ! The slime sucked us down // Generals Don't Die Fighting // Calypso:Is It Pornography In Sound ?" - I had seen a passing identification for this cover image as being from Vic Prezio, but have since found the Taschen publication MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POST-WAR AMERICA crediting Doore for it, whose 'style' does seem to me closer to the depiction.

Clarence Doore, RUGGED MEN 1958, (RUGGED MEN 1958-Dec) - "We Fly Into Hell - The drama of the Navy's bravest men--the Huricane Hunters // A sex-camp victim's confession--I Slit My Rival's Throat ... for the right to mother a monster! // Strip-Clubs--the housewife's new road to riches !"

Clarence Doore, HER BODY OR HER LIFE, (BATTLE CRY 1960-Mar) - "A girl's prayer 'Kill me quick!'--The 'Cutest' Cannibals In Aftrica // Bring Me Every Maiden In Mexico // Think you are a REAL man? Are you yellow? Turn to page 34 and find out // Exclusive! The story they warned us not to print--Fraulein Brigade (they don't use guns!)" - We've pulled our title from the second use of this art, some two years later, as seen on MEN IN CONFLICT 1962-June ("A cultured woman captured by a horde of savage raiders--Her Body Or Her Life // What would you do if you were trapped inside a sinking ship--Dark Waters Of Hell // An inside story of London's greatest vice scandal--The Noble Nymphs Of Mayfair // A ringside seat at a formal execution by the Guilotine--Slice Off Their Heads // A scientific study designed to help the average man--12 Ways To Improve Your Sex Life").

Clarence Doore, I STOLE A SLAVE GIRL, (ESCAPE TO ADVENTURE 1959-Nov) - "I Stole A Slave Girl In Honduras // The Lonely Women Of Lesbos Island // Chicago's Hell-Raising 'Emporor' // Sex Goes To College // Japan's Baby Nude // Ghost Planes Of World Wars I & II"

Clarence Doore, SLAUGHTER THEM SLOWLY!, (CHAMPION FOR MEN 1959-Aug) - "Savage vengeance in the desert sun: Slaughter Them Slowly! // Iris Parker's Play Cabin In The Sky // Special Bonus: Rare Guns Of The Old West! // A medical man's shocking opinion ofAmerica's moral code: Too Many Wrong Laws !" - This piece also accompanied an article inside another magazine from the same publisher a month later, inside ALL MAN 1959-Sept (titled My Body,My Soul-But...Let Me Live - "The difference between love and hate-or assault and seduction-is but a hairline. This Magda learned well...").

Clarence Doore, I FOUGHT THE SLAVE TRADERS OF ANGOLA, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959-June) - "I Fought The Slave Traders Of Angola // A psychiatrist's report on...Bored Wives Of Suburbia! // 200 pounds of gorgeous female and all of her fatal--Queen Of The Legion Of Death"

Clarence Doore, CHAMPION FOR MEN 1959, (CHAMPION FOR MEN 1959-Apr) - "I Escaped From Red China // Inside French Torture Chambers // Sex Habits Of High School Girls // Bonus:the full pictorial story of female wrestling !" - While the art does not seem associated with anything inside this magazine, it was re-used three years later as the cover of ALL-MAN 1962-July ("Behind the scenes of organized gambling - G-Girls Of Las Vegas // The day the U.S. Army died...Only The Dead Walked Home // The answer to every man's secret question--A Practical Guide To Better Sex // Bonus:Exposing the merchants who deal in slime - Vice--Under The Counter").

Clarence Doore, HENRY YAGER AND HIS GOLDEN GIRL GUERILLAS, (REAL MEN 1960-Mar) - "A thousand female furies, thirsty for loot, hungry for men--Henry Yager And His Golden Gril Guerillas // Czarist gold was in my hands but agents of the MVD had sworn "You'll Never Leave Russia Alive!" // The fantastic story of the man who founded the only successful free-love colony in America. The Passionate Prophet Of Oneida // Ivory, women and death in Africa's Kalahari desert-The Treasure Of Abu The Mad !"

Clarence Doore, REAL MEN MAY 1959, (REAL MEN 1959-May) - "Human bait for 1000 ravenous monsters--Escape From Shark Island // They Hunt Women-With Dogs! // Clay Malone's harem of seven foot blondes--Shipwrecked On Paradise Island" - You can see that the subject of the cover art does not align with anything detailed there.

Clarence Doore, MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959-Nov) - "The Box-Car Bawds Of Buffalo Bend--Sex was their commodity-and they brought it to the girl hungry killers of the lawless frontier // The Nation's Brawlingest Burg--The sin-suburb where wickedness is a way of life // The Outlaw Marshall Of Caldwell--Rustler, killer, bank-robber, he appointed himself with blazing six-guns // Lust in her eyes-larceny in her mind-murder in her heart--The Red Hot Kitten And The Ice Cool Cat"

Clarence Doore, ALL MAN JANUARY 1960, (ALL MAN 1960-Jan) - "Sin, Skin And Swindle-The inside facts about Nudism! // Savage Demon And The Killer Cat // The true story of the most depraved monster in history-The Man Who Invented Pain // The vice-queens had given their last warning: 'Get out of town, or die!'--The Day The Bawds Went Crazy For Blood !"

Clarence Doore, ALL THE WOMEN ARE MINE, (SPUR 1959-June) - "The Forty-Four Amazons Who Saved France! // The Terror That Threatens Your Eyes! // The most incredible sex-plot in history--Blood Brides Of Malaya // Gold! Yours for the taking: Lost Mine Of The Padres" - For this piece, we've adopted the title found on the article it accompanied later inside Battle Cry 1960-Nov ("Fifty Dyaks jumped us without warning, and made us prisoners. // All of Borneo was the savage king's own private harem!").

Clarence Doore, THE HELL-PITS OF AFRICA'Ss PIBOR POST, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1959-Aug) - "The hell-pits of Africa's Pibor Post--Where They Trade Their Women For Guns! // Is Your Doctor Giving You Cancer? // High-Flying Call-Girls Of The Yukon" - Inside the magazine, a black-&-white excerpt of the art accompanies the article with our title here ("Scum of East Africa...the Shenzi bandits traded women for guns and plotted to carve an empire of robbery and death // Screaming in terror, Laura watched the Shenze killer raise the glittering knife"). There is another story, location unknown at the present, that uses an excerpt of this art - THE GIRL HUNGRY KILLERS OF THE ISLANDS by Fred Albion ("The madman had stolen my woman and I was helpless to stop him!").

Clarence Doore, BATTLE CRY SEPTEMBER 1959, (BATTLE CRY 1959-Sept) - "The women of Macao who saved the American Fleet!--The Happy Harlots Of Half-Moon House // The Magnificent AWOL--The incredible story of the only man ever wanted by five armies at once! // Soldiers Or Swivel-Chair Jerks?--See 'our overpaid bums in uniform' //I Fought With The Kill-Queens Of The Himalayas--The amazing saga of the ex-GI who led the Dalai Lama's army of Amazons"

And she saw to it that we POW's knew it as well!")(strangely, the story's illustrator is specifically credited...as Ulbrecht Donner, when Eastman's signature is still clearly visible on the illustration. Finally, this piece, in modern times, adorned the cover of a collection of writings from these 'sweat mags', SOFT FLESH AND ORGIES OF DEATH. The first cover was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Norm Eastman, MEN IN CONFLICT 1962, (MEN IN CONFLICT 1962-Feb) - "From the diaries of the men who survived, the hellish story of The Cannibal Cruise Of The 'Essex' // Rome...Tangiers...Tokyo...they're all wild towns--but take it from a man who knows. Frank Frazetta, CAROL - Whimsical portrait of a significant girlfriend before Ellie.

Frank Frazetta, UNTITLED

Frank Frazetta, DELIVERY BOY # 1 - This is a panel from a proposed comic story that was abandoned after a few pages. I've seen it reported as intended to be pornographic in nature, about the mythical best 'tip' that a pizza-delivery-boy ever got . . .

Frank Frazetta, UNTITLED

Frank Frazetta, UNTITLED

NUDE IN POND - I've also seen it entitled SILENT BREEZE. There's an anecdote about the artist and a time soon after he ended his long stretch of work for the Al Capp studio, when he relates that he was 'overcome' by a burst of spontaneous creativity and spent several days painting a number of watercolors, representing many genres, to a point where he likened it to coming back to himself, teaching himself to illustrate as he once did before he had subsumed his style to another's. This is one of those pieces.

Frank Frazetta, UNTITLED - panel from a romance comic book.

Frank Frazetta, SWEET ADELINE 2 - "It's no use--There's still too much month left over at the end of the money !? - this was the final panel on one of the trial newspaper comic strips Frazetta prepared for his ultimately unsuccessful pitch.

A source familiar with the original-art states that it is by Robert Bonfils, but it doesn't really strike me that way and additionally the authoratative greenleaf-classics-books.com can only list it as *unknown* at the moment. However, the Amazon entry for the book lists the artist as Kinyon and in lieu of an alternate, we'll accept that for now.

Robert Kinyon (only my own attribution), SWAPPIN' SHOW-OFFS - "The hottest part of the action wasn't even in the script !" - The Candid Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Curt Aldrich. With the exception of two paintings by Harry Bremner, Kinyon seems to have been Greenleaf's go-to for color line-work. As this piece doesn't seem to stand out as 'not belonging' when grouped with his confirmed works, it gets to stay here.

Harold W. McCauley, NAKED HOLIDAY -"They exposed their bodies and their hungry desires" - The Nightstand Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Don Elliott' (Robert Silverberg). Note that this composition was re-done and updated by a different artist when a later edition was released by the Reed Nightstand imprint.

Darrel Millsap, A NEW CROP TO SWAP - The Nitime Swapbooks paperback release of the adult novel by Marty Machlia. This canvas came to auction with a handwritten note on the reverse giving the title, paperback production number *and* the name Robert Bonfils (such a note could have been added erroneously, any time after its creation), but alternatively, the website, greenleaf-classics-books.com (which impresses with its methodicalness), shares that both Bonfils and Darrel Millsap have personally worked with them extensively to identify so many of the covers in their 'inventory' (which isn't yet complete), the relevent upshot here being that that site identifies this cover as . . . Millsap's.

The research of the hard-working greenleaf-classics-books.com site allows the possibility that Millsap was the artist that executed this cover, so I'll go with that for the time being.

Darrel Millsap, PAMMY'S HAD IT - "Was she a lovely hayseed, or a lustful harlot ?" - The Candid Reader (Greenback) paperback release of Susan Post's story.

However, there is a website, greenleaf-classics-books.com (which impresses with its methodicalness), that shares that both Bonfils and Darrel Millsap have personally worked with them extensively to identify so many of the covers in their 'inventory' (which is *not* yet complete), the relevent upshot here being that that site identifies this cover as . . . Darrel Millsap, THE GRAY FLANNEL SWAP - "Behind one successful man...was Melinda" - The Candid Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Lambert Wilhelm' (William Maltese). I've seen at least one bookseller credit Robert Bonfils for this book's cover, but the authortative website, greeleaf-classic-books, who worked with the former art director of the company (Bonfils) canvasing most of the books produced during his tenure, list Millsap as the artist.

------------------------------------------------ SYD SHORES ------------------------------------------------

Syd Shores, THE VICE GIRLS OF CHICAGO, (MAN'S LIFE 1968-June) - "Night Of Horror For The Vice Girls Of Chicago ! // I Want To See The Color Of His Blood ! // Housewives That Like To Entertain In The Nude ! // Hopelessly Trapped 40 Fathoms Below The Cold Atlantic ! // The outfit that supplies Part-Time Sex Help to anyone who asks" - This art was then re-used only a year-&-a-half later as the cover of REAL MEN 1970-Jan ("The Con-Artist Cutie With The Million-Dollar Body ! // The Suicide Squad That Rode A TNT Bomb Into The Nazi Supply Route ! // 'I Hire American Girls To Work In Vice Houses South Of The Border !' // Aftermath of the Hungarian Revolt, the struggle that never really ended:'We'll Execute The Traitors Who Sold Us Out To Russia !" // An average couple reports on: Group Sex Games We Learned To Play !"). It was re-used once more for MAN'S LIFE 1972-Aug ("The $20 Prostitue Who Led Sixteen Men To Their Graves // Battle To The Death Along Blood River // The Bed Technique That Every Woman Dreams About! // I Screamed In Agony As The Bricks Hit My Skull // Wild Sex In Our Colleges!--The what-the why-the how-the what's next"). Note that, in the original painting, our girl has lost her underclothes. I feel this piece is credited, in one of the magazines itself, to Syd Shores - I note that I've also seen other accreditations elsewhere to both John Duillo and Vic Prezio.

Syd Shores, MAN'S ADVENTURE 1965, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1965-Apr) - "The Naked Torture Spies Of The Berlin Wall // Now driving helpless men and women to lust--Sex Drugs From Africa // We took $ 30,000,000 from The Fantastic Treasure Trove Of Bengal // Exclusive! First reports--From The National Survey Of Wife-Swapping" - Three years later this art was re-used on the cover of BATTLE CRY 1968-Feb ("Innocent Girls Forced Into Vice! // Love Failure--The Causes And The Cures! // I Was The Target Of The Red Killers Of Cuba! // Sex Pills That Work Miracles !") and then again on the cover of REAL MEN 1970-Nov ("The Man Who Tried To Make Every Woman In Europe! // VD-the disease that disappeared is making a comeback // Trick A Hophead And You Play With Death! // Held As A Captive 'Stud' On An Island Of Killer Women! // Sex Shows For Everybody--The booming market in live stag entertainment"). And still yet again for the cover of TRUE MEN STORIES 1973-Apr ("They gave me my orders--If You Can't Keep Her Quiet...We'll Cut Her Throat! // Why Women Enjoy Working In Porno Films // The Day I Bathed In Human Blood! // The Vice Queen Who Made A Fortune Out Of Pain // Sex Ratings--How Does Your Girl Measure Up?").

Syd Shores, ALL MAN 1964, (ALL MAN 1964-Aug) - "The true story of a peeping tom--'I Spy On Sex!' // When you are hunting a giant killer, a single error is equal to suicide--A Grizzly Means Death // Guilty or not, if the girl starts crying They Call It Rape // How doctors use the dead to protect the living--A Corpse Can Save Your Life" - Almost three years later, the art was re-used on the cover of MAN'S ADVENTURE 1967-May ("From the moment the torpedo hit our ship, we knew there was nothing more to hope for--Our Ship Was Our Coffin! // Is Your Love Life Satisfactory?--Read what a professional advisor has to say! // Too much money...to much brains--I was to be the mark, and...The Big Plan Was Rape! // Where panting pickups are a dime a dozen--For EASY Sex---Just Take The Bus !"). Notice that our foreground explosive-device is actually stenciled "MINNEN". The latter cover was featured in MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Syd Shores, ALL MAN 1965, (ALL MAN 1965-Jan) - "Blood For The Love Slaves // One of the great stories of WWII heroism--The Epic Of The USS Tang // They'll do anything for love--Sex Dolls Who Pay Their Men // A fortune for the man strong enough to take it--The Emerald Treasure Of The Andes // Exposing:How The Mobs Turn Strippers Into Vice Girls !" - Two years later, the publisher re-used this art on the cover of REAL MEN 1967-Aug ("Trapped On An Island With 40 Nympho Brides! // One Hour To Stop The Nazi Rape Of St. Romaine! // Sex Thoughts Of Women--How You Can Read Them! // 14 Easy Ways Your 'Best Friend' Can Cheat You At Gambling! // Wife-Swapping--A Reporter's Eyewitness Report !"). It was re-used twice more in the next six years, on BATTLE CRY 1970-Nov ("Why Women Like Swapping! // An American who tried cannibalism tells...What It's Like To Eat Human Flesh! // Big Boom In Small-Town Prostitution! // The King Of Blood And His Harem Of Kidnapped Sex Slaves! // A bowling pro tells: The Secrets Of A 200 Average !") and then on TRUE MEN STORIES 1973-Oct ("No longer restricted to millionaires or weirdos...Swapping Today Is Everybody's Game // More gold than I could carry...$26,000,000 Treasure Of The Double-Crossing Blonde // The Plot To Blow Up The 'Prostitute Express' // Sex For Sale-By The Day! The Week-Or-The Month! // Sam Bass-The Most Inefficient Outlaw In The Wild, Wild West").

Syd Shores, TREASURE HUNT, (TRUE MEN STORIES 1966-Mar) - "It was a triple-cross in murder and loot...Treasure Hunt A Lost Fortune In Nazi Gold // The Strippers Who Tricked The East German Reds! // The true story of an army sergeant who spent Two Weeks In Sex Camp // People who have tried it for years all agree that Wife-Swapping Is Fun !"

Syd Shores, REINHARD HEYDRICH, (WAR CRIMINALS 1963-Aug) - "An inside story of the man even the Nazis called 'the beast'--The Private Torture Slaves Of Reinhard Heydrich // Exclusive! The shocking story of a Japanese MP in Singapore--Horror Was My Business // A survivor's actual report--Hitler's Human Guinea Pigs // Joseph Goebbels-Ink-stained killer of the Third Reich // Her flesh was stained with death...The Blood-Soaked Queen Of Buchenwald" - The following year the publisher excerpted the torture scene to be secondary art on the cover of REAL MEN 1964-Nov ("Spies-sex-sadism-The Death Caves Of Malta"). Another year later a fuller crop was featured on the cover of WAR CRIMINALS 1965-Oct ("He made even the Nazis cringe with terror--Reinhard Heydrich's Castle Of Torture // A former Jap MP tells about his days in Singapore--'I Commanded A Murder Patrol!' // The uncensored story of the Nazi's top submarine commander--'Ajax' Achilles Voyage Of Terror // She suffered every brutal act that a twisted mind could manage to perform--Slaves Who Suffered Death In Hitler's Science Experiments // She picked her lovers from the dead...The Blood-Stained Nymphomaniac Of Buchenwald"). Just the torture scene was utilized once again to be the primary cover image for BATTLE CRY 1968-Jan ("The Man Who Taught The Nazis How To Torture! // 'Vice Is My Business'(I find girls for the Syndicate!) // The Night They Watched A Woman Strangle // Exposing:The Gentle Art Of Picking Pockets! // How You Can Have All The Sex You Can Handle!"). And after decades, the art graced a collection of entries from the Men's Magzine era called SOFT NUDES FOR THE DEVIL'S BUTCHER.

Syd Shores, THE MOUNTAIN OF TORTURE, (BATTLE CRY 1964-June) - "I fought my way into The Mountain Of Torture // I lay helpless while an army of maggots crawled over me--I Watched Them Eat My Flesh! // Nude Love Dolls Of Nympho Ranch // High School Sex Clubs--The scandal of America" - The art was re-used by the publisher two years later on MAN'S PRIME 1966-Aug ("The toughest job in the world, where they accept No Alibi But Death! // His hate was the flame that lighted a massacre--'You're All Going To Die Before The Get Me!' // Does your woman want you or your money--Ten Ways A Dame Can Drive A Man TO Hell! // Looking for an easy life? A professional says:'I Make $ 10,000 A Year From Suckers Like You!' // Last hour of life described by a man that was there...'Please Help Us...We're Running Out Of Air!'").

Syd Shores, HIS DREAM WAS A WORLD OF PAIN, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1961-July) - "Only through a ceremony of torture can they find a lifetime of health--They Offer Themselves To Pain // Attention all married men...Discover The Sex Trap That Can Wreck Your Life // An insider tells the story of blackmail, payoffs and phony arrests--Exposing:The Crooked Vice Cop // What is the truth behind the fad in women's figures--The Racket In Big Bosoms" - Note that the art was flipped for its first two appearances and that we're pulling our title from a even later appearance). Almost three years later the art was flipped to be used on the cover of MAN'S PRIME 1964-Mar ("When there aren't enough men to go around--Paradise On Harem Island // I Escaped From Castro's Cuba // Girls Who Work The Sex Shows // An oriental fortune waiting to be claimed--The Golden Treasure Of The Persian Desert! // A young couple's report--'We Love Wife-Swapping!'"). Another two years and the art is instead cropped tighter to be used on the cover of WAR CRIMINALS 1966-May ("Heinrich Himmler--His Dream Was A World Of Pain! // The Nympho Traitor Who Sold Out Her Country For Sex // The Mindinao nightmare that lasted six months--Lt. Hakaya's One Man Binge Of Terror // He used Americans as fodder for a Viet Cong game of hill--Let The Tigers Eat Them Alive! // She bought captured Allied soldiers at 1000 Marks a head!--The Nazi Countess And Her Harem Of POW Slaves"). Decades later, it appears on a 'pulp' story collection, BEASTS OF THE BLOOD-STAINED JACKBOOT. One of the covers was featured in IT'S A MAN'S WORLD.

Syd Shores, THEIR SPECIAL KICKS, (MAN'S ADVENTURE 1965-Nov) - "From his headquarters in East Germany, he directs an army of hired thugs...King Of The Communist Killers // The true story of a couple who make their living from love--'My Wife Sells Vice!' // No outsider who ever entered the tower, came out alive--House Of The Dead // The girl and the money would be mine...if I could swing the deal--Lust For The Goddess Of Gold // An exclusive examination of motives and needs--Why Women Turn To Sex !" - We've assigned this a title from it's second use, being the cover of TRUE MEN STORIES 1967-June ("The Berlin Bordello Where Hitler's Gestapo Boys Got Their Special Kicks! // Twelve Nude Come-On Girls To Lure The Japs To Suicide! // Sin In The Sun--Dude ranches where the babes are ready--willing--and panting! // The Blonde Beauty And Her Moment Of Ultimate Pain! // American And Foreign Sex Habits Compared !").

Syd Shores, EIGHT FRENCH LOVE SLAVES, (TRUE MEN STORIES 1957-Dec) - "Eight French Love Slaves Who Blew Up Hitler's Citadel! // Trapped By The Man-Hungry River Wives Of Pakistan! // Nymphomania--A prominent psychologist gives typical case histories! // I Was A Prisoner Of Castro's Brigade Of Pain-Loving Butcher Girls! // A You A Potential Sex Maniac?--Self-Test!" - After first appearing here, this art was next used on the cover of BATTLE CRY 1965-Jan ("After the war, it's time for revenge--The Torture Of The Traitor Tarts // A Frenchman Discusses America's Sex Life // In the jungle, violence is only a step away--Death Of A Savage Nympho // Confessions Of A Phony Beggar // The Facts About Paternity Blood Tests"). Then the following year the art was excerpted to be part of the cover of WAR CRIMINALS 1966-Oct ("Baldur von Shirach--Leader of the Hitler youth who said 'I Make Them Love The Sight Of Blood!' // An interview with a Viet Cong captain--'I Want To See American's Die!' // Three horror years on the isle of Bali--Commander Takashima's Prison Camp Of Living Hell // Von Haartz--The Pint-Sized Colonel Who Taught The Art Of Death! // The woman-loving SS Guard who loved to torture men-Trude Mahlzer--The Mad Killer Of Hagersdorf Lager !"). Then the publisher appears to have simply re-printed and re-released the original magazine of this thread, cover and all, twenty years later, making it TRUE MEN STORIES 1967-Dec. Then once more, spread across the very busy cover of BATTLE CRY 1969-Oct ("Death Ritual On The Island Of Naked Love Dolls // One out of every two persons is affected--The 30-Second Blackout That Can Kill You! // Nymphomaniacs Are Taking Cover America's Camp Grounds // The German Nude Who Tried To Wreck The Normandy Invasion! // Some may live in your locality...Now Revealed: 'Secret Listing' Of Sex-Hungry Wives !").

Syd Shores, ALL MAN 1965, (ALL MAN 1965-Sept) - "Her uninhibited antics turned a boating party into an orgy of terror--The Mad Nymphomaniac Of Avalon // The true story of the man who gave his name to torture--Count DeSade:The King Of Pain // The terrifying ordeal of a man who escaped from a communist firing squad--The Reds Sentenced Me To Death! // Exposing the operations of America's 'Secret Studios'--How They Make Sex Movies !" - This painting was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.
------------------------------------------------ ED SILAS SMITH ------------------------------------------------

Ed Silas Smith, THE BODY GAME - "Hotbeds and deathbeds were the playing fields of--The Body Game" - The Leisure Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'John Dexter' (a house name).

Ed Silas Smith, SWAP NYMPH - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Gage Carlin' (Thomas P. Ramirez).

Interestingly, the book's title page bears a different title, Every Day Is Tuesday. One source familiar with the original art states that Robert Bonfils excuted this. However, the authoratative greenleaf-classics-books.com, in their research, reports that they showed this cover to Bonfils and he stated that he did not paint it. Elsewhere on the interweb some sources are confident that it was painted by Ed Silas Smith.

Ed Silas Smith, SIN ONE,SIN ALL - "Gloria's love nest turned into a swapfest !" - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this tale by Curt Aldrich.

Ed Silas Smith, MORE THAN HER PUPIL - Greenleaf's paperback release of George Shannon's story.

Ed Silas Smith, THE LECHER - "Who was to blame -- himself, his mistress, or his son ?" - The Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Don Elliott' (Robert Silverberg). Note that Greenleaf had an earlier release of this, with different art, under their Nightstand Books imprint.

Ed Silas Smith, THE FAMILY BED - The Midnight Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of James Butler's story.

Ed Silas Smith, THE INSTRUCTOR - "They taught shame in this driving school !" - From the Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) imprint, this is the new re-worked artwork produced to be the cover of this story by 'Don Elliott' (Robert Silverberg), it being a reprinting (and re-titling) of his Sin On Wheels (from Greenleaf's Nightstand Books imprint). Smith utilized the same McCauley composition from more than ten years earlier, but definitely took pains to update the car's out-dated appearance (and strangely gave our femme a blouse ...).

Ed Silas Smith, SCREEN TEST SWAP - "Her casting technique was erotically unique." - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Curt Aldrich.

Ed Silas Smith, THE LIBERTINES - The Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Andrew Shaw' (Lawrence Block). It had previously been published as College For Sinners.

Ed Silas Smith, THE LEATHER TRADE - "Karen was a real switch-hitter !" - The Candid Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Marcus Miller' (a house name).

Ed Silas Smith, SWAP IT TO ME! - "If Helen married Jim and Thelma married Hank ... so what ?!" - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Alan Marshall (a shared pseudonym).

Ed Silas Smith, TEACHER'S DOG - The Pet Books (Greenleaf)paperback release of the story by John Kellerman. At auction this painting was identified as Ed Smith's. Note that at the bottom border of the image, there's a

Ed Silas Smith, THE ANATOMY OF A NEIGHBOR - "Even the dog joined their swap group to study--The Anatomy Of A Neighbor" - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Harry Best. suggestion that this is a painting executed over a pencil drawing.

Ed Silas Smith, THE SWAPPERS - "After all, what's a little lust between friends !" - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Curt Aldrich.

Ed Silas Smith, SUCKED INTO SIN - "Nancy And Rod were the stars of the swap show !" - The Companion Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Curt Aldrich.

Ed Silas Smith, THEIR UNWILLING FLESH - Midnight Reader's paperback release of Cliff McMillan's adult novel.

Ed Silas Smith, [=====] - The Adult Books (Greenleaf) paperback release. The Greenleaf-Classics website seems to indicate that a Smith atribution is most likely to be the correct one.

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - When this piece came to auction, it was thought to have been used on some book from Greenleaf's Midnight Reader line, and also with a title provided "The Admirer", but the source of that wasn't shared. No paperback candidate has yet to be identified.

Ed Silas Smith, CERTIFIED PUBLIC STUD - "Double-entry books were never like this !" - The Pleasure Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'John Dexter' (a house name).

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - This came up for sale and the auctioneer provided the title "Baby Doll". I haven't yet seen a paperback with that title that matched this.

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - When this piece came to auction, it was thought to have been used on some book from Greenleaf's Midnight Reader line, but while it seems in keeping with some of the darker covers, the title has not yet been identified. Alternatively, I'd like you to take a look at Smith's cover for FLESH IS MY PRISON (a Midnight Reader book) - in my mind, this work could very well be a preliminary, and a different 'take', for the idea that resulted in that.

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - This has been identified as being a cover for something produced in Greeleaf's Midnight Reader imprint, and indeed there are some still un-identified titles in that line, but more is not known yet.

Ed Silas Smith, DESERT OF DESIRE - "There were the French, the Arab ... and Olive !" - The Leisures Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'John Dexter' (a house name). The cover was featured in YOUNG LUSTY SLUTS.

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - When this piece came to auction, it was thought to have been used on some book from Greenleaf's Midnight Reader line, but if true, the volume hasn't yet been identified.

Ed Silas Smith, BUFFY AND THE HOLY QUEST - "He searched the Gay world for the perfect mate !" - The Adult Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Chris Davidson' (Christian Davies).

[artist unknown], [title unknown] - When this canvas came to auction, it was thought that it must be the cover of a Midnight Reader paperback, possibly by one of a couple of artists, but more identifications have not been discovered yet. My money's on the artist being Ed Silas Smith.

Ed Silas Smith, ALL MY LOVERS - Greenleaf's paperback release of Patricia Kane's story. It's not uncommon to see this piece credited to Robert Bonfils, but apparently it is Smith's name in the book.

Ed Silas Smith, TEASER'S PET - Greenleaf's paperback release of Terry Lambert's story.

Ed Silas Smith, TO EACH HIS OWN LUST - Greenleaf's paperback release of the story by Owen Burgess.

Ed Silas Smith, THE BED SUZI MADE - The Midnight Reader (Greenback) paperback release of the adult novel by Carleton Lewis. This canvas came to auction being noted as being painted by Robert Bonfils (and that the signature under the matte was "indistinct"). However, there is a website, greenleaf-classics-books.com (which impresses with its methodicalness), that shares that Bonfils had personally worked with them extensively to identify, 'yes' or 'no', so many of the covers in their 'inventory' (which they admit is *not* yet complete), the relevent upshot here being that that site identifies this cover as . . . Smith's.

Ed Silas Smith, THE MAN COLLECTOR - "Her arms were as soft as her kiss was evil !" - The Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) paperback release of this adult novel by 'Don Elliott' (Robert Silverberg). The book is actually a re-titling of an earlier release, CONVENTION GIRL, with new cover art.

Ed Silas Smith, STUD SPREE - "He sinned for science in a free-love experiment !" - The Pleasure Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Don Bellmore' (a house name).

Ed Silas Smith, THE CARNAL BEDS - The Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by Patrick Lund. While not supported by the authoratative greenleaf-classics-books website, when someone else hazards an identification, it is Smith.

[unknown artist], MY BRIDE FOR YOURS - The Midnight Reader (Greenback) paperback release of Curtis Aldrich's story. It seems that Ed Silas Smith is the odds-on-favorite to have executed this, but I've seen no confirmation.

Ed Silas Smith, [unknown title] - At recent auction this carried the title "Hot Like Mom", but as I could not find a matching cover with that title, I suspect that was created by the auctioneer.

Ed Silas Smith, THE FORBIDDEN - "Her life story was written as she lived it--in shame !" - The Reed Nightstand (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Allan Mansfield' (Donald Westlake this time). This tale was first published, part of their Nightstand Books imprint, as The Pages Of Sin and the pseudonym was given as 'Alan Marshall'
\

Ed Silas Smith, FLESH IS MY PRISON - The Midnight Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this novel by Conrad Sloan.

[artist unknown], [unknown title] - This painting came to auction as part of a slew of other original art used for the covers of Greenleaf publications, but what this was used for is not yet identified. My uneducated attribution would be Ed Silas Smith.

Ed Silas Smith, STUD'S HOLIDAY - "Clay turned his exile into a sex isle !" - The Nightstand Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Alan Marshall' (a house name).

Ed Silas Smith, FULL-COURSE SWAP - The Nightstand Books (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Don Bellmore' (George H. Smith).

Ed Silas Smith, FLESH ITINERARY - "Savage lust rites...last stop on a -- Flesh Itinerary" - The Pleasure Reader (Greenleaf) paperback release of this story by 'Tony Calvano' (Thomas P. Ramirez). The painting appeared, with chaptr-opening text, in SIN-A-RAMA.

Ed Silas Smith, THE BED AND THE BEAUTIFUL - "She wanted love--men wanted her body !" - The Reed Nightstand paperback release of this story by 'Don Elliott' (Robert Silverberg). It had been published previously as Backstage Sinner.
------------------------------------------------ ALBERTO VARGAS ------------------------------------------------

Alberto Vargas, MODEL LIFE (prelim) - This would seem to be a preliminary painting for the final version that appeared as the "Model Life" Varga Girl in Esquire Magazine 1945-November. It is a bit different in pose and, more importantly I think, in attitude (call it less innocent...), and indeed the parchment painting has brought nearly $30K by itself at auction.

Alberto Vargas, JUNGLE VARGAS GIRL - This was one of the auction titles for this piece. Not sure where this work first appeared.

Alberto Vargas, RAINCOAT (preliminary) - This seems to be the first trial version of this piece. It's fascinating to see that they began with the raincoat as being the clear type, the girl being a redhead and a very slightly different, but still striking, eye contact.

Alberto Vargas, UNTITLED - Was probably a preliminary for the VARGA girl of Esquire 1944-Apr

Alberto Vargas, ANITA EKBERG study - The original, dated "Nov 65", would seem to have been created in service of some unrealized Playboy feature of the time, with the composition then repurposed for a slightly more generalized Vargas girl for the February 1966 edition of the magazine.

Alberto Vargas, [unknown title] -- no caption found

Alberto Vargas, COLD RAY PERMANENT WAVE 3 - Advertisement for beauty hair-treatment.

Alberto Vargas, NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION, (inside PLAYBOY 1965-Jan) - "I just can't understand why I keep having trouble with the same New Year's resolution every January." - This painting has been featured in THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIN-UP book 2.

Alberto Vargas, BLACK PRIDE, (inside PLAYBOY 1970-Sept) - "I believe in black pride, but there are some things I'd rather take lying down."

Alberto Vargas, PIN-UP IN JEWELS - This painting was featured in SHAMELESS ART.
------------------------------------------------ GEORGE WILSON ------------------------------------------------

George Wilson (only my own attribution)], LIFE WITH WOMEN, (part of cover of BLUEBOOK FOR MEN (March 1965)) - This will be a strange thread. You see, our image here is the central piece (of 3) of this magazine cover - three varied images. I've seen this particular image as its own painting (unattributed) on the Heritage Auction site. That central bikini-ed figure is identical to the femme fatale on the cover of the 1980s paperback CARIBBEAN KILL, which I've attributed to George Wilson, because of it's own style, composition & imagery being identical to *another* paperback-cover, for HELL'S HOSTAGES, which has been identified by others as Wilson's. So, did Wilson paint the original 1965 beauty that he so clearly 'swiped' 15-odd years later? I'd say yes. The figure & skin-tone is not unlike so many others he depicted, but I think the clincher is the streaky background with the black specks for texture - this typical feature of his is certainly downplayed in this slim painting, but it's clearly there.

George Wilson, [title unknown] - The speculation around this piece is that it was in service of a paperback espionage novel seemingly set during the 'Cold War' with the U.S.S.R., or perhaps the Korean conflict. Perhaps it was not used, as I've yet to identify such a book. Having said that, I later discover an American Legion Magazine feature, about prisoners-of-war, that utilized an exteremly similar ink-wash executed by Wilson.

George Wilson, [title unknown] - Not sure to what use this painting was put - it was one of the late-career canvases that the artist's estate gave over to the Society of Illustrators's permanent collection holdings. I'm guessing a paperback thriller, but if so, it hasn't been identified yet.

George Wilson, THE SNOW SOLDIERS DIE LIKE THIS, (SEE FOR MEN Jan-1961) - "The Snow Soldiers Die Like This, on page 44, a shocking book-lengther of World War II - Butchery!, by Nelson Algren, author of 'The Man With The Golden Arm' - Brother 12's Prescription: Beds, Barbed Wire, and Babes - Beat the tax racket !, a congressman's new scheme" - This was the cover for a magazine that had originated as a LIFE-wanna-be and several years before this had transitioned to become a men's adventure magazine. The magazine is now discussed as being called SEE FOR MEN, but you are just as likely to find simply the shortened SEE on the cover instead. (You have to wonder, with the shadow of the plane hidden under the title-logo, if some last-minute emergency forced an editor to use instead an *interior* illustration by Wilson. I certainly haven't seen yet any other men's-magazine cover attributed to Wilson.)

George Wilson, EICHMANN-MASTERMIND OF THE HOLOCAUST - "He maimed, mutilated, and murdered millions !" - Zebra's paperback release of John Donovan's Nazi profile. This is known to be a Wilson canvas, and his signature can be made out.

George Wilson, CULT 45, (THE PROTECTOR # 4) - "Cult 45's religion is death . . .its creed is destruction" - This was the 4th release in the Protector action-paperback series by Rich Rainey.

George Wilson, NO QUARTER GIVEN, (SHARPSHOOTER # 8) - Another release in this Leisure Books action-paperback series, all written under the house-name of "Bruno Rossi" (this one thought to be actually by Russell Smith and an unknown collaborator). At this time, I can't tell if Wilson did any of the other covers for the series.

George Wilson, THE CHAMPAGNE KILLER - This was Dodd, Mead & Co.'s release of this mystery in the Julian Quist series by 'Hugh Pentecost' (Judson Pentecost Philips). Interestingly, as it was auctioned off recently, it was 'billed' erroneously as being painted by the George Wilson (1919-2007) who was a close friend of Mickey Spillane - while this bore the signature "G. Wilson", that signature was identical to the ones seen on the 1980s action-paperbacks that consensus says were produced by *our* George Wilson. Anyway, in the one work I've seen by Spillane's friend, an album cover for MIKE HAMMER (by Stan Purdy), his signature was different (and instead was "G. R. Wilson"), and the art-style was much more more expressionistic, less realistic than our own subject here.

George Wilson (only my own attribution), WALKING DEAD MAN - Dodd, Mead & Co.'s release of a Pierre Chambrun mystery by Hugh Pentecost (pseudonym of Judson Pentecost Philips). While Wilson did several other covers in this stream of Pentecost novels and no signature appears on this one, several features of this montage are duplicated in other paintings of his.

George Wilson, HIGH PLAINS PRINCESS, (SPUR GIANT 1992) - "When a princess joined him in the saddle, McCoy gave her the royal treatment !" - Another Leisure Books paperback release in the adult-western series by 'Dirk Fletcher' (Chet Cunningham). This is known to be a Wilson canvas.

George Wilson, [unknown title] - this sketch/drawing was seen on the Ebay market in 2017. No dating information was expressed. Possibly it was a preliminary for a painting or was an exercise complete in itself.
